[book_vs_movie] THERE ARE WITCHES LIVING IN THERE

LOOK!
We loved movie-book comparison so much that we decided to make this a weekly meme on our blog (as weekly as we can manage). We made its own cutesy badge and everything. (yay!)
Anywayz...

After about two mounts of listening I'm finishing with the Caster Chronicles this week and i find it i have a lot of thoughts (and filling) about it. So the natural choice for this week adaptation was of course:

*this one didn't pass so well at the box office so no sequel movie so boo-hoo Hollywood....

 - the BOOK -
Book: Beautiful Creatures
Series: (Caster Chronicles #1)
Author: Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

Synopsis:
Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.
Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.
In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.
  • I loved this book. It has so much soul in it, it has a heart on its own. The story was more complex from the movie, which is to be expected and once i read it i also realized i liked it so much better then the movie.

 - the MOVIE

Movie: Beautiful Creatures
Director: Richard LaGravenese
Writers: Richard LaGravenese
Cast : Alice Englert, Alden Ehrenreich, Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Jeremy Irons
  • I watched the movie before reading the book. I loved it on the first watch and only saw its shortcomings once i read the actual book. But its still a good movie and IT IS the only reason why i got into this series in the first place so...

For the most part the movie follows the book closely.

  • the characters:
There are a slight differences between the charters on page and the real action ones.
The one that stands out the most is Amma's. Whereas in the movie there is Amma taking care of the Ethan's house and being the Lunai Librie librarian. In the books there are actually two different people doing those jabs. Amma is the housekeeper and seer and Marian the Librarian (yes, it rimes) is, you've guested it, the librarian.
Lina i liked better in the movie because she had more character and felt like real-life person. In the book we only see her as Ethan sees her, and is through lovesick eyes which is not always the true picture.
But Ethan i loved the best. His adaptation is spot on. From the actor they picked to the accent the cheesy southern politeness and the gentleman manners.
Also after reading the book i kinda wished we had more Link time in the movie, i really loved his character, the loyalty he possessed towards Ethan, the naivete that he projects!
Also i would have loved to see the Aunts on screen, but although ridiculously hilarious i can see how they were not necessary for this part of the story.
  • the story:
There were a few changes in the story that surprised me after i read the book, because it changes the dynamics complitly. It would have been interesting to see how they would play the changes out if the movie had sequels, alas, that would not happened. Still the movie story stands out on its own legs even as a single.

It was really good, the adaptation. i liked the translation from book to movie, thought it had some clumsy parts and was rushed at times. The movie was enjoyable even for the one who hasn't read the book.

What about you?
Have you watched Beautiful Creatures? Have you read the book?
Do you want to?
Which one do you like best?

  1. My dad and I watched the movie (I've read the book and he hasn't) and he seemed to enjoy it more than I did, maybe because I was nit-picking at some of the differences. :P But I did love Ethan. I also really loved Ridley, even if that wasn't how I imagined her to look at all. Link was pretty funny and quirky. :) Lovely post, Boyanna!

  3. I never really enjoyed this story so I didn't even bother with the movie. Somehow I feel like the time for this book for me passed some years ago. I strongly believe that if the movie was filmed after the first book was out it would be more successful. Sorry you won't get a chance to see other books becoming a movie. :( Great post, Boyanna :)

  4. I thought the movie was changed quite a bit and did not capture the book enough. Some of the characters just really didn't transform from my head to the screen

  5. I kind of started the story and then stopped... I've been planning on giving it another shot one of these days though...!

I am glad to hear that the movie followed the story closely but when I saw the trailer (sometime last year) I was pretty disappointed by who they chose to play Ethan, I had definitely imagined him in a different way :/ (even if I didn't have much to base him on .-.)

    Great post, Boyanna!! :)

  6. I have not read the book, and don't think I will watch the movie, either, but I did try the trailer (first time watching it, hehe). I like Paranormal stuff sometimes, but it's something I have to be in the mood for before I appreciate anything under its genre. With that said, I'm happy to know you liked the movie! I read some of the movie reviews and a lot were pretty disappointed, so I'm glad to see a more positive angle!
